Sam's response into the Peter Fonagy review in Autism and ADHD
Hi and Welcome to my deep dive open and living blog document on the new "independent" report into Autism and ADHD delivered to the UK Government and written by Prof Peter Fonagy and team.
Here I shall be deep diving into the following : Who wrote it ? Why wasn't any people with a diagnosis of Autism and ADHD involved ? Why wasn't there anyone with a Mental Health diagnosis involved ? Why was it "Nothing About Us, Without Us" ? , Why didn't they use actual open data from the ICD 11 and the World Health Organization ? Why didn't they use the open data from NHS England that's available and open and - which shows it's all under diagnosed and also under funded ?

lead report writer - who isn't an expert on ADHD and Autism
Yes, my first thought and question is : why aren't any of the report writers experts in Autism and ADHD and Neurodevelopmental conditions ?
Here's Peter Fonagy the main lead for this report. His background is in education and his teaching is in psychoanalysis says his bio on the UCL website here https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/7792-peter-fonagy/teaching . He works in Therapy which includes CBT.
CBT is well known to not work if you have a diagnosis of Autism and/or ADHD, there's plenty of research on this.

Question : So what is Diagnostic Overshadowing and why did he and his team use this in the report ?
What he did in this new government report was to mix up Autism and ADHD with mental health conditions. This is actually called - Diagnostic Overshadowing and is a form of discrimination.
DefinitionThis can particularly affect people with a learning disability or autistic people because their behaviour can be misunderstood. It is important that staff working with people for these groups are aware this could be an issue so that they can avoid misinterpreting people’s behavior.
